Teacher Stocking – Free Crochet Pattern

You know what they say:  It’s the most wonderful time of the year….

There’s nothing better than spreading a bit of holiday cheer, and to me, the spirit of the season is in giving to others.  I wanted to help Kaelyn experience the joys of giving and also to give her fellow classmates a vehicle to enable their own sense of giving.  Let me tell you, this class loves their teacher.  She is one special lady who gives so much to them every day.  So it just made sense to give them an opportunity to express their love during this special time of year.

I had the idea to crochet a teacher stocking.  It needed to be big, so that it could hold lots of things at once.  So I made one big stocking, bought a hanger, and we proceeded, not really knowing how it would go.  Because we wanted to make sure the whole class would have ownership, Kae only told a couple of friends and asked them to “pass it on”.  In no time, the whole class was in on the secret.

One kid hid the stocking under his jacket, another took the hanger, and a lot of the others intercepted the teacher at the door and distracted her while the stocking was hung.  It was truly a team effort, and between the lot of them, they managed to get the stocking up as a complete surprise.  Kae had started off the stocking gifts that day with a pretty polished rock, an origami ostrich, and a small bottle of lotion.  I suppose I had envisioned that the stocking would continue to gather small gifts until Christmas break and then the teacher would get them all at once, but the natural course of things was that the students were eager for the teacher to dig in.  So what has actually happened is that each day the kids bring small gifts, and the teacher has a time in the afternoon when she checks her stocking.  This is actually so much better because it is a gift that gives every day, and the kids can show their appreciation in a million little ways.  Many of them are drawing pictures, writing notes, or bringing in homemade presents.  And there has been a wave of Christmas cheer in the classroom.  A couple of days later another student brought hot cocoa for everyone.  Kids started bringing in decorations.  It’s really sweet and inspiring to see how they’ve all joined in.  All they needed was a jumping-off point.

Here’s the stocking I made.  Maybe your child has a special teacher, too.  🙂
